Hepatitis A virus can cause liver damage and is preventable with the hepatitis A vaccine. The following groups are considered at the highest risk for contracting the virus or developing serious complications and should be vaccinated: people experiencing homelessness or unstable housing, people who use drugs (injection or non-injection), gay and bisexual men, people who are or were, recently incarcerated, and people with chronic liver disease, including cirrhosis, hepatitis B, or hepatitis C. There are currently numerous hepatitis A outbreaks happening throughout the United States being spread through person-to-person contact. Cancer treatments can suppress the immune system and cause the virus to reactivate, which can lead to serious liver damage or liver failure.Baltimore City is seeing a rise in hepatitis A virus cases. According to the ASCO statement, up to 90% of people diagnosed with cancer have at least one risk factor for hepatitis B. On July 27, 2020, the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) published provisional guidelines recommending that all people diagnosed with cancer be tested for hepatitis B before starting anticancer treatment.
