Girl groups in Detroit are all the rage, so Sparkle and Sister rope in Dolores, better known as Dee (Tika Sumpter) a girl who harbors no ambitions to be a singer but instead to be a doctor and who can be counted to speak her mind. While he likes Sister, he finds in Sparkle someone to really care about. Sister loves the attention and the men, and soon their combined talents attracts the attention of ambitious manager Stix (Derek Luke). What she doesn't have is confidence among other things, so she turns to her more glamorous older sister Tammy, who is generally referred to as Sister (Carmen Ejogo) to sing Sparkle's songs in a more sultry manner than the good church-going sister can. Sparkle (Jordin Sparks.a name not tinged with irony) is a shy girl who writes songs and has a good voice. The remake of the 1976 Joel Schumacher keeps to the spirit of the original while altering things to showcase the actors and singers, but the story pretty much stays the same. ![]() However, Sparkle is less a cautionary tale than a big, lavish show with an interesting story, some good performances and wonderful music. It is tempting, and far too easy, to see that WHITNEY! was more the character of Sister than anything else: a woman with beauty, talent, and ambition that found herself married to the worst kind of man, sped her way into drugs and ultimately paid a price for her fall. However, this was not meant to be, as Whitney Houston self-destructed before Sparkle was released. Sparkle might have been WHITNEY's! comeback, and it would have shown that WHITNEY! had grown and matured as an actress. A Supernova Is Nothing More Than A Dying Star.

![]() Most of the staff were on the young side here (and so not very experienced), and so some mishaps are to be expected I think (our server inadvertently brought me the wrong dish - everyone else's was fine). In terms of service, our server was very, very friendly. Still, with things like two hearted, furious and cask dragons milk, I was more than a bit impressed by the selection here. ![]() They have a nice selection of beer (stuff from summitt, surly and bells, along with some local and regional beers), but you won't see anything mindblowing (for the most part). The place doesn't exactly inspire a whole lot of confidence upon walking in, looking for all the world like your typical pizza hut, that just happens to have a bar area (towards the left) as well.Īs for the selection, it's very good, though probably not great. ![]() I read the reviews of this place before stopping by (it's close to my hotel), and so was expecting at best a decent experience this evening. I've already sent a BM to thank Matt (tokerace) for the recommendation.Ī couple of comments at the outset. Nov 07, 2011Īt the recommendation of tokerace, I stopped by here tonight with some family and friends before an upcoming wedding. For what it's worth, our appetizers were the proper balance of sweet/savory and hot/greasy, perfect for pairing with a rich and slightly-boozy seasonal beer : )Īltogether Three Squares is definitely worth a visit if you're in the area and looking for a better than average selection of beer and adult beverages The level of quality achieved in relation to both the food and overall service is a real bonus. Other selections included Alaskan Winter, Odells 90 Schilling, and Deschutes Jubelale.Īlthough we didn't tuck into the menu proper, the selection and prices are what I've come to expect from the Blue Plate group, and I'm comfortable in recommending them to someone looking for a change of pace that won't necessarily break the bank. I'm pretty sure they had a firkin on hand, and it might've been Surly Darkness. Service was prompt and friendly throughout the night, even though we were only in for a couple of drinks and an appetizer or two.ĭid I count right at twenty taps? I was happy enough that they had a seasonal I'd been looking forward to trying, and it was a better than average selection, especially for the northwestern 'burbs. It's not much to look at from the outside (not nearly as colorful as the Claddagh next door) but the interior designers didn't miss a beat: A combination of muted earth tones and brighter reds, designer lighting fixtures, 'dark wood' bar, yep, this place is right at home in historic downtown Maple Grove )Īlthough the place was absolutely packed on a Saturday night, we were fortunate enough to be seated at a two-top in the bar after a wait of only a few minutes. While it's quite different from the grit of the urban 'beer bars' that I regularly frequent, Three Squares is a pleasant change of pace. For years I'd heard nothing but rave reviews and finally had a chance to check it out when a friend recently moved back to the area (literally right across the street). ![]() ![]() The double lanterns shown from the steeple were supposed to be information about the British Troops approaching the area by sea.Īpart from its presence in history, Old North Church, which was officially Christ Church, is a sight to see because it’s Boston’s oldest functioning church and an architectural beauty. According to the history of the area, when Revere made that heroic journey, he’d made arrangements for some signals to be given out from the bell towers of the building the night before the Revolutionary War broke out. You’re also going to want to see the church that played a role the night of Paul Revere’s Midnight Ride to Lexington. One of the first dwellings in the country to get the status, the Paul Revere House now showcases artifacts of the time, and even some of the belongings of the Revere family. However, it was brought back into the family and later sold again, this time to be a museum. Although the structure did see some disarray and renovation over the years, it still stands as a model of those times, and as one of the oldest buildings in an urban setting.Īfter the house by sold by Paul Revere, it changed hands a few times and has been a shop, a bank, and a cigar factory among other things. This building in North End dates back to the 1700s. Visit Paul Revere House Īnother one of the top things to do in Boston on the Freedom Trail is visiting the Paul Revere House. For the next release, we will improve the effects workflow, and for the end of the year, we should hopefully have the Qt6 version with improved GPU support. Some great work was also done by the MLT team on our video back-end, meaning that the audio cracks that could happen on some projects should be fixed in the latest MLT development version used in our binary packages (AppImage, Mac and Windows). And we also finally fixed a longstanding issue that caused the Kdenlive UI to show texts in English instead of the requested language.Ī lot of polishing and bug fixing work has been done in this release, some highlights include: improved handling of imported clips with huge sizes, snappier playback of clips in timeline, added option to render in full color range, added warning when cached data exceeds 1GB, improved filtering of the Project Bin to mention a few. This brings an improved accuracy, support for many languages, and the possibility to translate to English on the fly. Another addition is the support of the Whisper speech to text engine, in addition of the already supported VOSK back-end. These sequences can then be assembled to create a final project. This allows you to open several timeline tabs to work on different sequences of your project. The big highlight in today’s release is the support for nested timelines. A detailed transparency report will be published in the next days.
